Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala,, has called it a quit for the 2026 season and will not take part in the Diamond League Final after sustaining an injury.
The Kenyan sprint star has suffered a fracture to his left calcaneus, the heel bone, ruling him out of the 2026 Diamond League final, which will take place on September 4–5, in Brussels, Belgium, at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme.
In a statement released on his social media on Tuesday, September 1, the former Commonwealth 100m champion revealed that the injury worsened after he sustained it some weeks before competing at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
“Unfortunately, due to a stress fracture to the heel bone of my left foot, sustained two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, I won’t be able to compete in my final two races of the season,” part of his statement read.

In addition to missing this year’s Diamond League Final, Omanyala, who enjoyed an impressive campaign and currently sits third overall in the standings, will also miss the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship scheduled for September 11–13 in Budapest, Hungary.
Omanyala had already secured direct qualification for the multi-million-dollar event, but with his season now cut short, the 30-year-old can only reflect on a campaign that gave him plenty to be proud of while appreciating those who stood by him throughout the journey.

The 30-year-old becomes the third Kenyan who will not take part in the inaugural Championship later this month.
He joins Kenya’s best, Faith Kipyegon, who withdrew several weeks ago due to injury, while 800m world champion Lilian Odira will also be absent from the team.

Ferdinand Omanyala’s 2026 season recap
Omanyala’s 2026 outdoor campaign featured a packed schedule of major global appearances.
He opened his season with explosive momentum in April, securing back-to-back victories at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix in 9.98 seconds and the Absa Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi in 9.96 seconds.
He then shifted his focus to team glory in early May, anchoring the Kenyan men’s 4x100m relay squad to a brilliant new Kenyan national record of 38.27 seconds at the World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas.

He maintained that impressive form as he moved onto the elite global circuit, clocking a swift 9.95-second third-place finish at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix before heading to the Asian Diamond League leg, where he registered two of his biggest triumphs of the season.
He narrowly finished second in Xiamen with a time of 9.98 seconds, then bounced back immediately to win gold at the Shanghai Diamond League in a sizzling 9.94 seconds, securing a historic run of five consecutive sub-10-second performances to start the year.
The gruelling schedule eventually began to take its toll during the European leg, with his streak ending at the Rome Diamond League after an eighth-place finish in 10.11 seconds.
However, hidden beneath his sixth-place performance at the Paris Diamond League, where he clocked 10.02 seconds, was a developing stress fracture in his left heel bone.
The injury ultimately derailed his bid to defend his crown at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where he finished sixth in his semifinal heat in 10.19 seconds.
With the setback now forcing him to shut down his campaign, Omanyala’s 2026 season has come to an unfortunate end.
That mirrors August 2025, when he automatically qualified for the Zurich Diamond League Final but was forced to pull out just days before the event after battling severe hip, iliopsoas, and gluteal pain.
